Seachtain na Gaeilge in Ms. Colleran’s 5th
Ms Colleran’s 5th Class had a fantastic time celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge. The children enjoyed a range of fun activities through Irish. They engaged in many learning experiences as Gaeilge, such as, singing lively Irish songs, participating in Irish dancing together and showing great creativity during art activities, all inspired by Irish culture. Maith sibh to all the pupils for their enthusiasm and effort throughout the week. Bhí an-spraoi againn le chéile!
5th Class Visit Portumna Workhouse
As part of 5th Classes study of The Irish Famine, pupils went on an educational trip to The Portumna Workhouse. Pupils engaged with history firsthand while fostering a connection with the past by exploring this 19th Century institution which acted as a last resort for the poor, sick and destitute during The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mór).

The Irish Famine (1845 – 1852)
Our class has been learning about the suffering of the Irish people during the famine. We researched life in the workhouses, coffin ships such as The Dunbrody and Jeanie Johnson.
We also studied the artist Markey Robinson, whose depictions of the famine inspired our art pieces.

Lá Pancóga sa Rang a Cúig inniu
Ms. Tierney’s 5th class put their cooking skills to the test today. First we wrote out a procedure for making pancakes.
We mixed flour, eggs, milk with a pinch of salt. We enjoyed tasty pancakes in class.

Grandparents’ Day in Ms Colleran’s 5th Class

Grandparents’ Day is a special opportunity for pupils to welcome Grandparents into the classroom. Together, they share stories, activities and learning experiences. The visit builds connections between generations, celebrates family and gives pupils pride in their work while creating warm, memorable moments for everyone involved.
Lá Fhéile Bríde ò Rang a Cùig
We celebrated the patron Saint of Ireland, St. Brigid by making crosses and talking about the miracles associated to this amazing woman.
She symbolises creativity, wisdom and healing.

Ms Colleran’s 5th Class – Measures
Ms Colleran’s 5th Class

The class enjoyed exploring the topic of Measure / Length in hands-on, engaging activities. Working in small groups , children estimate, measure and compare a variety of classroom objects using standard units such as millimetres, centimetres and metres. They discuss strategies, record results and check each other’s work to improve accuracy. Through teamwork and problem-solving, pupils develop confidence using measuring tools and understanding real-life applications of length.
Grandparents Day in Ms. Tierney’s Class
Thanks to all the grandparents who came to visit us today!
We brought in photos of our grandparents who could not be with us today and we added them to our Remember Me tree.

Learning all about length in 5th class
We have been busy measuring our classroom, school corridors, school yard and the basketball courts. We used many different measuring tools – eg. trundle wheels, measuring tape and meter sticks.
We love using our Maths skills in the real world outside of the classroom.
